Rural Broadband Update

20 Nov 2010

Natural Enterprise would like to say thank you to all those who registered on MakeYarmouthFaster.com in support of achieving higher speed broadband for the Yarmouth exchange. We received 160 registrations of interest which equates to 13% of the exchange.

Whilst this level of registrations was below the target of 200, we believe it did demonstrate the need for improved broadband, which was a key pre-requisite of an application for grant funding. Thank you to those people who contacted us directly with your comments, and thanks also to Navigate IT & Telecoms, Yarmouth Town Council, Yarmouth Business Association, Yarmouth Harbour Commission and Country Land and Business Association for their support.

A bid for funding was submitted to the South East England Development Agency at the end of September. A decision is expected by early December.

The aims of the project are to at least treble broadband speeds for the majority of the Yarmouth exchange, whilst retaining the cost at current market prices. The exact pricing and contract terms will be determined by the success of the bid and the number of subscribers. Unfortunately, the scheme will only proceed if grant funding is received, and if the level of subscribers makes it viable to do so.

As soon as we learn the outcome of the bid we will let you know.
